Talcahuano Apartment

Recoleta, City of Buenos Aires

The apartment is on the 23rd floor of a high- rise building located in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is this urban context together with sparse high- rises nearby that allow all main rooms in the apartment access to panoramic views of the city.

The approach taken in this project was to achieve an integration of colors and finishes throughout the apartment.

The kitchen comes with a panoramic view that extends into the living room. The idea behind this area was to showcase the view by darkening surrounding features so as to make the kitchen visually recede and give way to the ever-changing cityscape. The dark colors applied to cabinetry, counters and flooring interact through different textures: the metal effect porcelain tile flooring; the oak cabinetry is black while the counter and base of the upper cabinets is a lustrous black, which reflects and multiplies the surrounding light and views.

The closets were a matter of design. For the two brothers who share a bedroom, different colors were applied to the interior of each closet. The bottom section features large drawers which allow the children easy access to toy storage. For the sister’s room, the closet design includes doors with built-in whiteboards for dry erase markers.

The bathrooms are windowless, small and have a low ceiling. This is why material was kept to a minimum; the same types of materials were applied to walls, floors and countertops to create an array of tones.

The existing door frames, made of folded sheet metal, were painted the same color as the wall and doors. For the jamb, a strip of oak similar to the oak wood floor was applied as a finish.
