Av. Santa Fe 772, Retiro, City of Buenos Aires
The building that houses the Plaza San Martin location is an example of the excellent architecture found in the neighborhood of the Kavanagh building in Buenos Aires.
The store sits on a corner where previously stood a long- standing, traditional Buenos Aires-style café. This location annexed an adjacent store.
As a result of this annexation, and given that the new location featured a large part of the ground floor, a restoration of the storefront was carried out. This created a sense of unity, and it also reestablished a close relationship with the building in its entirety. To that end, the existing bronze awnings were restored while those missing were completed with motorized awnings in a color that complemented the color of the building. All old branding signage on the exterior was removed and the building stone was restored to its natural off-white color. This extended the natural color of the building to the entire storefront.
In the interior, evidence of previous remodeling jobs was found; the ceiling featured three layers of old remodeling. These layers were removed, and the original ceiling was saved which brought back the high ceiling in the customer area of the store. The entrance, which features a traditional Buenos Aires style café door, was also restored.
In terms of the choice of materials applied, the client requested keeping the existing marble flooring. This was a big challenge because the marble was no longer available on the market; and wherever an extension of the material was required, new pieces of marble were placed in a negative pattern to the existing marble. As a counterpoint, the columns were stripped of finishes and transformed into exposed concrete columns.
The restoration and recovery of the architectural value of the building to amplify the presence of the store location was a strategy used in other commercial locations designed by PilottoSanguinetti.
